The Different Types of Operating Authority
There are four different types of Operating Authority for interstate transportation and it is possible for a company to have more than one type of authority. They include:
- Carrier of Property - A for hire motor carrier that transports regulated property owned by others for compensation.
- Passenger Carrier - A for hire motor carrier that transports passengers for compensation.
- Household Goods - A for hire motor carrier that transports household goods (other peoples' personal belongings) for compensation (i.e. a moving company).
- Broker of Property - A person or company that arranges or offers to arrange for transportation of property by an authorized motor carrier. Brokers do not assume responsibility for the cargo.

INTRASTATE Operating Authority Process
When you haul freight within a single state's borders, you are operating as a INTRA-state Motor Carrier and required to obtain intrastate Operating Authority. Each state has different rules and regulations concerning Intrastate transportation. Furthermore, the agencies that govern Intrastate transportation vary from state to state.

Lost your permit? We can help. If your permit was granted within the last 90 days, we can get obtain your original permit for $60. If your grant date is older than 90 days, we can obtain your original permit for $110. This also includes any Re-Entitlements or Re-Instatements on your authority.
